Located in different continents, Animal Collective is an umbrella name used for the grouping of four people: Avey Tare, Panda Bear, Deakin and Geologist. Summertime Clothes, is the second single taken from Animal Collective’s recent album, Merriweather Post Pavillion. This single has four mixes all very different from the next which is a refreshing change rather than listening to versions which only differ slightly. The first mix is the 'Album Version', which is heavily laden with deep electro sounds. The vocals and melody are actually quite easy on the ear and I like the harmony vocals in this version. The 'Dam-Funk Remix' is not unlike something from the 80s, with snatching claps and synthesized keyboards and drums. This is a much more upbeat and lighter take on this single. An off key and eerie version of this single can be found in the 'Leon Day AKA L.D Remix'. It has a bit too much going on in this mix with the hard hitting beats and the light chimes in the background mixed with the sonic sounds and the vocals on top of all this which are sometimes too overpowering. There is a hint of a Latin feel to the 'Zomby’s Analog Lego Mix' in the intro. As we move further into this track deep sonic sounds beat off each other and unfortunately, it seems to merge into one mishmash of noise. The vocals do not match the sound of the heavy beat and it all becomes too repetitive. Although a better single than the last one Animal Collective released (‘My Girls’) I certainly wouldn’t go out and buy this. 4 Helena Rea |
