This highly dramatic album features two large orchestral epic scores from British composer Daniel Pemberton, composed for BBC's adventure series Heroes and Villains (known as Warriors in the US). Pemberton has written original music for UK television shows including Prehistoric Park, Hiroshima, The Haunted Airman, Peep Show and High Spirits With Shirley Ghostman, wrote the music for the two first episodes of the series, focusing on Attila the Hun and Napoleon. This album features both scores performed by the City of Prague Philharmonic Orchestra... Ah, Movie Score Media does it again - releasing music for soundtrack fans that few labels would even think of tracking down and issuing on CD. This tireless commitment to unearthing and releasing music for soundtrack lovers once again pays off for fans of the genre. Daniel Pemberton's music as released here deserves to be heard by as many people as possible. The album opens with the music to the Attila the Hun episode (22 tracks), with the score for the Napoleon episode (13 tracks) completing the collection. Attila is a symphonic adrenaline fest with its epic action music and ethnic colorings, while Napoleon impresses with its Beethoven-influenced classical sound. While both scores are impressive, I have to admit to preferring the music for Napoleon. Sadly, this is the shortest of the two soundtracks, being approximately 20 minutes compared to Attila's 40 minutes. That's not to say I didn't enjoy Attila - far from it. It's just that Napoleon, for me, is a much meatier score and sounds a little more like contemporary classical music. The combination of both styles on one album makes this an interesting collection. At the end of the day this is yet another soundtrack from Movie Score Media that will delight fans of the genre. 9 Darren Rea |
