A Def Comedy Jam alumni and one of the original 'Queens of Comedy' Mo'Nique is now known to audiences worldwide as an Oscar Winner for her Best Supporting Actress role in the hit movie Precious base on the novel Push by Sapphire. The irascible comedienne also won the 2009 Golden Globe and 2010 BAFTA awards for that same performance, and in One Night Stand she showcases the outspoken humour and trademark "get the hell outa my way" attitude that brought her to the attention of US movie producers in the first place... Mo'Nique: One Night Stand is an hour long recording of a live standup gig that was originally released in 2004. Mo'Nique is loud, in your face and her material pokes fun at her family life and past marriages. Yes, there's an element of '80s standup, but to be honest it doesn't matter, as Mo'Nique's larger than life personality carries her through. While she swears like a trooper, her act is, for the most part, clean. When she does stay into dangerous territory (female masturbation and pornos for example) she always stays on the right side of good taste. Her gag that centres around Rugrats is made even more amusing by the fact that she would later go on to provided the voice of Aunt Moo in the straight to DVD movie Rugrats: Tales from the Crib (2006). Mo'Nique fans will love this, but there's probably not quite enough quality material here to appeal to a wider audience. 7 Darren Rea |
