Sweeping from Connecticut to California and from the Civil War to World War I, East of Eden follows three generations of the tumultuous Trask family: patriarch Cyrus; his feuding sons, Adam and Charles; and quarrelsome grandsons, Aron and Cal. Through these men’s lives slithers Cathy - a she-serpent who holds their love and enmity... East of Eden is a six hour 1981 TV miniseries adaptation of John Steinbeck's classic novel. The cast includes Timothy Bottoms, Hart Bochner, Jane Seymour, Sam Bottoms, Bruce Boxleitner and Warren Oates, Lloyd Bridges, Howard Duff, Anne Baxter, and Karen Allen, and the plot explores the nature of good and evil, the origin of sin and the hope of reconciliation. A period drama, this production stands up well today almost 30 years after it was first broadcast. The acting is universally faultless and includes appearances from some well known faces (apart from the obvious) including Bruce Boxleitner (Babylon 5) and Karen Allen (Raiders of the Lost Ark). Jayne Seymour is incredibly well cast as the twisted Cathy and it's not hard to see why so many men fall for her before they realise what sort of woman she is. Extras include a 2008 interview with Jane Seymour (15 min, 43 sec) which hold a few interesting snippets of information. Apparently she originally auditioned for Raiders of the Lost Ark and it was Spielberg who introduced her to the movie adaptation of East of Eden when he discovered she was up for the role in this TV miniseries. She also discusses, very briefly, her work as a Bond girl. You also get text based Biography of John Steinbeck and Filmography of Jane Seymour (which doesn't include East of Eden). A powerful drama that is well worth owning. 9 Nick Smithson |
