The Antennas are a new Nashville, Tennessee trio made up of brothers, Layne (lead vocals, guitar and keyboards) and Landon (backup singer, bass guitar and keyboards) Ihde and completed by Mark Niemiec (drummer/producer). Once the Ihde brothers met Niemiec, in a local recording studio, they realised they shared a love for the same musical roots and as if by magic, another band was formed. The Antennas are here to release their debut self titled album which set off a storm when they self released it in the USA in 2009. So much so that the UK label, Popjinx, picked them up for the EU. This album opens with a lively beat and punk rock feel in 'A Call To Arms' which sets the tone for the rest of the album. 'We Are The Rabbits' is a catchy tune with a melodic chorus, The guitar riffs are a plenty and I just love the clean cut sound it has. A little slower in tempo is 'Here We Go (Record Store)' this is a quirky sounding tune which really suits their voices as its a little deeper than the previous two tracks. The harmonies melt well together too. 'Stop Running Their Mouths' has a great chorus, I love the way it goes from high to low pitched and into talking mode. This is a very chirpy song which will stick in your head. Beware! The intro of 'All Aboard' sounds heavier and more rocky than the previous tunes on this album. It's something more of a rock ballad, albeit a small one but it's heading that way. 'I Found Out' again has a slower tempo and much emotion. I love the passion portrayed in this song. 'Giving It All Away' packs a punch with the drums at the intro and throughout its entirety. I like the directional change at 1 min, 48 sec, where the guitars take lead. The intro of 'You Really Bring Me Down' reminds me of Sid Viscous's 'I'm The Antichrist', a much lighter version admittedly but nonetheless there is a hint of the melody there. 'Do, Don't Say' again is quite heavy on the bass guitar but this is evened out from the lighter sounding vocals. 'Stop, Look, Listen' sounds a little bland, too repetitive and monotone for my liking. The only part that sounds pretty good is at 2 mins, 22 sec when a faster beat comes in on the guitar but apart from that I would write this song off. 'Walk Out Your Door' is very Green Day-esque. It's quirky, rocky and punky, the vocals are cool and I love the high pitched guitar solo. The Antenna's have a sound of Green Day about them, which is refreshing to hear what with the charts being top 'R'n'B' heavy in today's music world. A fun, quirky, punk rock band that aren't afraid of standing out is what Antenna are about and personally I think it's great! 8 Helena Rea |
