From Mychael Danna, composer of The Ice Storm, Vanity Fair, 8MM, Capote, Monsoon Wedding, The Nativity Story and The Time Traveler’s Wife, comes the Grammy nominated soundtrack to Jonathan Dayton and Valerie Faris’s indie hit comedy road movie... The soundtrack to Little Miss Sunshine represents an interesting collection of music tracks. I originally purchased this soundtrack after seeing the movie, so impressed was I with a couple of tracks, and now Silva Screen Records are reissuing it to the UK market. Relistening to this over a year later, I realised that it's one of those soundtracks that you'll listen to intensely for a few weeks and then probably never play again. In truth there are only a couple of good themes and these are played to death throughout this score. Highlights include 'How it Ends'; Rick James's 1981 hit 'Superfreak' (which went on to form the basis of MC Hammer's 'Can't Touch This'); 'Chicago'; 'The Winner is' (which is an instrumental version of 'How it Ends' and 'First Push'. There were a couple of tracks which appeared to have been digitally corrupted ('Til the End of Time' and 'Superfreak'). I tried downloading them again, but still the problem persisted. An e-mail to the label manager enquiring about this was never answered, so your guess is as good as mine as to whether this has been fixed before the album was released to buy. So what we have is an above average soundtrack which you'll no doubt enjoy for about a month after you've watched the movie and then probably never play again. 6 Darren Rea |
