Continuing to explore the rich and astounding qualities of Spanish film music, MovieScore Media releases the score for Shiver (original Spanish title: Eskalofrio) by Fernando Velázquez. The composer came to international prominence with his horror score for The Orphanage, which earned him a Spanish Music Award and a European Film Award nomination. His music for Shiver is a dark musical journey with a lot of frightening dissonance and aggressive orchestral writing...

Unfortunately I have to admit that I wasn't overly struck with the score to Shiver. As an atmospheric soundtrack to the movie, I'm sure that it works incredibly well, but listened to in isolation it just sounds like any one of a million horror soundtracks that attempt to convey suspense and horror by belting out loud, painful sounding chords with a heavy reliance on a screechy string section.

I only found a handful of tracks that I'd actually want to listen to more than once. These included 'A Place Where the Sun Cannot Burn', which has an interesting theme at its core; 'Funeral', which sounds like a Howard Shore inspired track from Shore's The Silence of the Lambs period; and 'No... Not Yet', which is a short mellow track, which then descends into your typical shock ending theme.

If atmospheric scores that go nowhere are your thing, then you'll love Shiver. Otherwise you'll find nothing much of interest here.
