Having never met in person, My Head Radio is a band with a difference. Made up of four individuals who all met online. Wex Wexford (programming) from The Hague, NL met Boca Smole (vocals) from Michigan, USA, on Myspace over a shared love of funk, jazz, hip-hop and experimentation. The group was completed by Ruby Redharez (guitar/trumpet) from Harlem, NL and Foxy Yayo (vocals) from The Hague, NL when found on an Internet 'dating' site for musicians. Boca talks about the motivation behind My Head Radio: “From what we know of history, people speak of an energy or bond flowing through everything. Be it religious, spiritual or scientific, an unseen force is a common thread. For the first time, this unifying energy is represented in a tangible way; the Internet. My Head Radio is a manifestation of that energy - without it we wouldn't exist”. Listening to their new EP, Everybody's Waiting, I would never have guessed that this group have never come together in person. Their sound is passionate and warm with a closeness about it that brings a feel good vibe to it. Opening the EP is 'Tom's Diner' which is the groups version of the Suzanne Vega's classic. It's an upbeat smooth tune filled with electronica and some pure genius jazz. Mix this with Boca Smole's sexy vocals and this is a sultry summer song. I just love the jazzy brass in 'Walking Headz', it's a sophisticated sound mixed with the funky tune of the guitar. This is a futuristic tune with hints of the '60s and '70s mixed in which also features in 'Gag N Squeal'. A little more upbeat featuring the vocals of Foxy Yayo this is a truly sexy song. Having slowly built their fan base up this group's success is solely self made. Releasing music from their own independent label, Hotblack Records, this band really have come a long way in the last few years and for the third year running have been nominated in the Detroit Music Awards in the Outstanding Electronic/Dance Writer/Producer category. Already working on their second album this band certainly know how to work hard for their keep. With the release due in the Autumn we have a bit of a wait but if this EP is anything to go by it will certainly be worth the wait. 9 Helena Rea |
