Songwriter Seth Woods, better known as The Whiskey Priest, comes from Austin, Texas. Once Seth and his band, Sad Accordions, finished their first record, their writing process began to move towards a more collaborative effort which had less of an emphasis on already existing individual songs. This left Seth with a catalogue full of homeless songs. Seth began working with Alex 'Hooch' Dupree, a fellow musician, were they gathered a small group of friends in a downtown church attic. Recording a handful of songs on a four track tape machine; this became the start of their album Wave And Cloud. This album certainly has a distinct sound, it's country meets melancholy indie. There are a few upbeat tempo tracks like ' Winter Secret Army Blood' and 'The Way Of The Future' yet they still have the sombre feel of sadness about them. The strings really tug at the heart and a lump forms in the throat with the passion of Seth's vocals and musical wizardry. Then there are some songs which are just plain odd and uninspiring, such as, 'If A Train Was A Doctor Was A Song'. It sounds rough, and out of tune. I'm sure this is how they meant to portray it but it just doesn't sit well. I certainly wouldn't be pressing the repeat button on this track. Then there are songs such as 'Wave And Cloud' which has a great melody on the piano; it's warm and soothing but the vocals appear to clash making it sit uncomfortably. Some songs I love on this album, they give you a warm fuzzy feeling but they are all laced with a sadness which, if in the wrong mood, could lead you into a cascading depression and if you're not careful, you may have to listen to the likes of Steps or even Barry Manilow to bring you out of! 6 Helena Rea Buy this item online |
