Gilles Peterson is probably best known for his BBC Radio One show Worldwide. It’s here that he joins the dots between artists, producers and styles from jazz, latino, hip-hop to Afro and even Dubstep. Moving into the album world, Peterson is releasing Gilles Peterson: Worldwide, which is a celebration of his syndicated radio show. The opening tune, ‘Tides’, is a sumptuous melody to sink and relax into. The piano plays beautifully, with the waves rolling in the background and the soft tapping on percussion; this tune really transports you to another world. Dreamy. This album goes on to some groovy beats and even more sumptuous sounds than the opener in ‘He Loves Me’ and ‘The Audience’ but what I love about these tracks is one minute we are in a dreamy relaxed state and then find ourselves transported to a lively hip hop beat the next as in ‘I Luv U’. There are some true classics here which take me back like ‘Galang’ and ‘1 Thing’; it’s good to hear these back on our sound systems! I would love to talk about each track on this album but as it boasts a huge 24 tracks we would be here all night. Let’s just say if you are a fan of Peterson’s radio show you will love this and if you’ve never heard of Worldwide before then where have you been? Shame on you! Go and get this now, soak up some of the coolest vibes you will hear this year. Sit back and reminisce. 10 Helena Rea |
