The third season kicks off as Michael emerges from the crystal clear Miami sea completely free from interference by the organisation that burned him, only to find that he’s now under investigation by the police. He has a new foe in the form of Detective Michelle Paxson, who quickly becomes obsessed with uncovering the truth about him. Ever the reluctant hero, Michael and his unconventional ‘team’, Fiona and washed-up military intelligence officer Sam (Bruce Campbell), take on more of Miami’s underworld as Michael tries to get back into the CIA. Latin American thugs, a kidnapped child and deals with some familiar faces help Michael inch closer to his ultimate goal - getting his identity back... Season three of Burn Notice is made up of 16 episodes spread over four DVDs. along with "job of the week" there are a number of ongoing story lines. These include Michael trying to keep one step ahead of a female detective who won't settle until she finds out what he's up to (although this story arc goes nowhere and is wrapped up a little too quickly); the mysterious Strickler trying to persuade Michael to work for him; and Michael attempting to get the unhinged and powerful Gilroy to trust him enough to allow him to work for him. For me, the standout episode was A Dark Road. This allows Sharon Gless more of an acting challenge as she agrees to go under cover in order to help Michael with a case. She has to befriend a woman working in an insurance office in order to extract sensitive information. Tyne Daly (who played opposite Gless in the '80s in Cagney & Lacey) guest stars and it's great to see the two actresses working together again. Extras include Smash, Crash, Boom: Inside the Burn Notice Stunt Unit (9 min, 45 sec look at how the car and truck crash sequence in the last episode was constructed); and 2009 San Diego Comic-Con International (10 min, 05 sec Comic-Con Q&A session which opens with Bruce Campbell explaining why Burn Notice has been invited to a comic/horror/sci-fi/fantasy convention). This is another strong season with no episodes that dip in quality. Certainly one to add to your collection if you've been following the show since the start. 8 Darren Rea |
