Haruhi Suzimya seems to be taking over this month with the release of two differing DVD sets. The first, The Melancholy of Haruhi-Chan Suzumiya & Nyoron! Churuya-san Collection 2 is a fast paced set of comedic vignettes, which are akin to smashing your brains out with a particularly sugary lolly pop. Drunk, this might be hilarious, sober the relentless nature of the comedy is a little like having a speed freak screaming in your face.

The show takes the characters from the original show and turns them into cute and funny versions of their original characters - think frantic, frenetic and mawkish. Melancholy has the final episodes, fourteen to twenty five, all of which are played just for kicks and jokes.

The second part of the disc, Nyoron! Churuya-san is a fan created offshoot, which turned out so well that it was finally included with the official animation; you just know that somewhere in Japan there is a fan who is in seventh heaven, especially as it beats being sued for copyright infringement. All together the two sets of shorts runs to nearly an hour and fifteen minutes.

The 1.85:1 anamorphic widescreen presentation is pretty straight forward, the animation is crisp and clean, although its cartoon look would be hard to ruin, given that the drawing are fairly basic. Audio, also is nothing spectacular, with an English and Japanese 2.0 tracks, with subtitles. Extras consist of TV commercial spots and How About Oniguchi? (39 min, 50 sec) which has the vocal actor, which appear in the commercials for the show, shooting said commercial as well as doing other stuff. It tells you nothing about the show but does afford a peek behind the promotion.

Although essentially a minor offshoot of a bigger show the disc has enough content and extras to feel that it is good value for the money, whether you will actually find any of it funny is up to your own sense of humour.
