Ever fancied getting a job demolishing buildings, well if you have Excalibur Publishing has added another game to its expanding vehicle simulation empire, Demolition Company: Gold Edition. I have in the past been a bit hard on the simulations, though this was due to their lack of ‘wow’ factor, which would have you playing them time and again. With Demolition Company things are a little better. You start as the sole employee of a demolition company. Following your initial training missions, which gets you used to the controls and basic moves from hammers upwards, you’re suddenly ready to open for business. You have a limited amount of money and equipment at the beginning of the game, but there are jobs to be done and if you want a plump bank balance, even jobs previously completed can be repeated. So, why all this activity? Well, you don’t want to spend your whole life breaking up small rubbish with a hammer; nope what you need is the ability to blow buildings to smithereens, either with explosives or with a wrecking ball. The graphics are more than passable for the type of game and the addition of different camera angles will help in directing your destruction. Unfortunately, although the game has two playing modes, neither one allows for an extended experience. Long standing players should expect to finish this in less than four hours, at any of the three difficulty levels. Not all is lost, if you don’t care about the career aspects of the games, then the free play option allows you to get down and dirty straight away. So, it’s not a great game, but certainly better that some of the other vehicle simulations, at least it allows for some progression and the satisfaction of unlocking even bigger vehicles. 7 Charles Packer |
