From Alex Heffes, the composer of The Last King Of Scotland, Touching The Void and State Of Play comes an uneasy and exquisite soundtrack to Mikael Håfström’s supernatural thriller starring Anthony Hopkins... Alex Heffes original score to The Rite reminded me of a number of other composers work. That's not to say that this is a poor offering in it's own right, far from it. The opening track, 'The Procedure' reminded me of the work of Vangelis. That doesn't mean that the track relies on the use of synthesizer, which is the trademark of Vangelis's work, rather that it touches on a number of Vangelis-esque themes. There is also a hint of Howard Shore's music for The Silence of the Lambs (especially in tracks like 'Michael Remember/The Hospital' and 'Angeline's Story' and Danny Elfman's score for Wanted (most notably in the tracks 'Going to Rome' and 'Phone Call to Father'). 'Michael Remember/The Hospital' also has elements of David Arnold's score for the more recent James Bond movies. Overall, though, this is an enjoyable soundtrack that has plenty of depth and emotion. 8 Darren Rea |
