Reality Cheque is the second album from My Head Radio - a band who have never all met in person. Wex Wexford, a US ex-pat beat producer living in The Hague, met vocalist Boca Smole in Michigan, USA on Myspace over a shared love of funk, jazz, hip-hop and experimentation. The group was completed by guitarist/trumpet player Ruby Redharez and vocalist Foxy Yayo in Harlem, NL in 2007 via an Internet "dating" site for musicians. This is an interesting collection of musical styles which all have a slight jazz infusion. From the opening 'Walking Headz' which has a heavily influenced jazz base, to the closing 'Invisible Jesus', this is an enjoyable trip through the minds of My Head Radio. 'Tom's Diner' is a reworking of Suzanne Vega's '80s song. Which brings the track - which I have to admit I was never keen on - bang up to date. I much prefer this version to the original (I know - blasphemy). Whatever your musical leanings, it's worth giving this group a listen - you may just be surprised with how diverse this album is. 8 Nick Smithson |
