Former Prodigy and Pitchshifter guitarist Jim Davies once again teams up with producer Pete Crossman for Victory Pill's latest album The Digital Divide. Even if you've never heard any of Victory Pill's music before it's pretty obvious that someone from Prodigy is behind this group. So it won't come as much of surprise to discover that it's Prodigy's guitarist Jim Davies. In fact a few too many tracks on this album sound like reject Prodigy tracks - mainly variations on 'Firestarter'. 'Generation Waste' is a badly disguised version of 'Firestarter' and 'Black & White' has that 'Firestarter' riff barely hidden away. This album sounds a little old hat - it reminds me of the sort of AOR I used to listen to in the '80s - which is fine - but with a Prodigy twist - which is a little weird. Possibly the strongest track on the album is 'Burnout' closely followed by 'Spit (Featuring Graeme Cornies)'. 'Memento' is the closest we get to a good old Prodigy track. It's not bad as mindless rock music goes, but you might want to do something more interesting (like playing a console game) and have this playing in the background. 6 Nick Smithson |
