When the Clouds Ran Away is the debut album of Si-Tew, who has delivered an interesting collection of modern day Electronic Soul. The album shifts from glitchy swung beats via heart felt soul to organic cinematic compositions. And the result is quite hypnotic. The vocals on this album are provided by number of of the UK's most talented artists, including Lemington Spas's siren Shanade, who opens When the Clouds Ran Away with 'Silhouette'. Jack Da Lad & Dwayne Hayden bump things up mid album with the energetic and uplifting Soul/Hip-Hop number 'Independent Light. Sheffield's soul don Pete Simpson appears on the warming 'Need to Grow', a drop in the deep soul ocean. We also have the funky, electronic sound of 'All You Need To Know', which gives way to 'Cold Day' a serious acoustic track that sounds like the music from a romantic movie. This, for me was the album's highlight, reminding me of the work of David Torn - especially his soundtrack for Lars and the Real Girl. 'Vaguely Fading (Red)' is another cinematic track, but with Tetris style sound effects thrown into the mix - sounds awful... until you hear it in action. There are so many influences on this album that there's bound to be something here that grabs you. Personally I couldn't get enough of this... 9 Nick Smithson |
