Film Music 2011 is the fifth instalment in the annual “Year Book” concept from Silva Screen. This 12 track collection features music from a selection of movies released in cinemas throughout 2011. Silva Screen Records have done another excellent job of collecting together tracks that, whilst not the original, are almost identical in sound. In fact, and this is blasphemy I know, the track 'The Reunion' from War Horse is actually a little bolder than the original and I personally preferred it. It's actually the same length as the original, and (sad, I know) I overlapped the two to see how close they were... and they're almost identical in their timing and orchestration. This attention to detail was something that I was really impressed with. We've reviewed several of the albums that these tracks are taken from (War Horse; Drive; The Adventures of Tintin) and I defy anyone to tell the difference between the tracks here and the originals. The only slight complaint I had was that this MP3 album fails to provide information on each track's composer. So while reviewing this I was completely in the dark as to the majority of the composers. However, I pretty much twigged that Patrick Doyle was responsible for Thor as it sounds very similar in style to his score for Eragon. And Alan Silvestri's music for Captain America sounded a little too similar to John Williams's original score for Superman (1978). I was also surprised that tracks from Immortals and Drive were included - I'm sure there were more worthy movies that could have been included. Just off the top of my head: Battle: LA; Sucker Punch; Source Code; Green Lantern; Cowboys & Aliens; Rise of the Planet of the Apes. And, as with Film Music 2009, once again I enjoyed several of the tracks enough that I've added them to my list of scores to purchase in the near future. This is another fantastic collection of themes that will whet your appetite for the full albums.
