This title features two digitally-remastered episodes from the BBC TV series presented on a special vinyl-look CD, with original album sleeve notes. Ronnie Barker, Richard Beckinsale, Fulton Mackay and Brian Wilde star in two classic episodes written by Dick Clement and Ian la Frenais... This Porridge compilation is released through AudioGo's "Vintage Beeb" catalogue. "Vintage Beeb" sees classic albums first available as BBC LPs, now available on CD for the first time. There are two episodes of the BBC's '70s comedy Porridge on this release. The first, An Evening in, is from the show's first series which was originally broadcast in 1974, while the second episode, Heartbreak Hotel, is from the show's second series and was first broadcast in 1975. In An Evening in Godber is moved into Fletch's cell, and confides that he finds it tough each time the door bangs shut. Fletch advises him to think of it as 'a quiet night in', but the trouble is Godber has 698 more nights to get through. In Heartbreak Hotel Godber has an uncharacteristically violent episode after receiving a 'Dear John' letter from his fiancee Denise. Fletcher tries to help him - but Fletch's daughter Ingrid proves more of a consolation. It's impressive to note how well this series has stood the test of time. It's almost 40 years since Porridge was originally broadcast, yet still the jokes work well. Timeless comedy that, for the most part, works well in an audio format. 7 Darren Rea |
