Mark Northam and Joohyun Park perform some of the music from Michael Giacchino's scores for the Walt Disney/Pixar Films Up, Ratatouille, and The Incredibles on solo piano. You'd think this a bizarre idea, reworking Giacchino's orchestrated scores for a lone pianist, but what we end up with is actually quite an interesting result. The result is an album of weird and wacky pieces of music, as well as mellow segments and suspense/chase tracks. The only thing I wondered about was who this album was aimed at. Those who enjoy classical music will probably turn their nose up at this, those that enjoy soundtracks will more likely want to hear the full orchestrations. The only audience I could think of (and this is because I'm currently learning to play the violin) is those who play music by ear, or who own the music book for these films and would like to perform with the piano as their accompaniment. It's an interesting album and I really hope that it finds a big enough audience to ensure that Buysoundtrax Records release more in a similar vein. 7 Darren Rea |
