Greta Gerwig plays Lola, a 29 year-old woman dumped by her longtime boyfriend Luke (Joel Kinnaman) just three weeks before their wedding. With the help of her close friends Henry (Hamish Linklater) and Alice (Zoe Lister-Jones), Lola embarks on a series of desperate encounters in an attempt to find her place in the world as a single woman approaching 30... Fall on Your Sword's original score for Lola Versus is pretty impressive. While its quirkiness won't be to everyone's tastes, personally I found it a refreshing change. The music is probably best described as electro pop fused with jazz and drawing inspiration from classical music. Personal favourite tracks 'Pregnancy Test', which reminded me, in style, of The Penguin Cafe Orchestra's output and 'End Titles' which compels you to tap your toe/nod your head/get up and dance like your dad at a wedding. While a rather strange collection of tracks, this was an album that on the whole I enjoyed. However, it's not one you're likely to return to in the future - more that you'll play this to death and then store away to gather dust. 7 Darren Rea |
