For those that enjoy pop and rock-influenced scores then The Newton Brothers's soundtrack to High School is worth checking out. The Newton Brothers are an up and coming film scoring duo whose other credits include the acclaimed indie drama Detachment as well as the recent action movies Hijacked and Setup. Infused with a lot of rhythm and movement, the music for High School is driven by guitar-based tracks, as well as some quirky underscoring and more ambient thematic material. I couldn't help thinking that if John Hughes was alive and still making teen movies like his classic The Breakfast Club, then The Newton Brothers would be composing his soundtracks for a more modern day audience. While this album won't be to everyone's taste, for the style of movie this is deigned for it really couldn't have been any better. While personally it's not a score I'd listened to in isolation very often, technically you can't fault it. Highlights include 'Spelling Bee'; 'Psycho Ed', which has a latin flavour mixed with a hint of cliched Western score; and 'Typing Test / My Cat Brian Adams', which pays homage to Brian Adams's music. The album contains 14 tracks and runs for 30 mins, 07 sec. 7 Darren Rea |
