Set in small-town Iowa, Butter is an outrageous comedy about an adopted girl who discovers her talent for butter carving and finds herself pitted against an ambitious local woman (Jennifer Garner) in their town's annual contest. The terrific ensemble also features Ty Burrell, Olivia Wilde, Rob Corddry, Ashley Greene, Alicia Silverstone and Hugh Jackman... Mateo Messina covers so many genres in his score for Butter that it's difficult to know where to start. There's gospel, blaxploitation (funk influenced), and I couldn't help be reminded of the music of Little Shop of Horrors movie (1986). It's interesting, but definitely an acquired taste. The album contains 45 tracks which makes up 39 min, 45 sec worth of music and will no doubt appeal to fans of the movie. Personal favourite tracks include 'Masterbutter P1' and 'Our Winner P1' which are as close as Messina comes to a conventional soundtrack score. It's funky and very infectious, but it's certainly an album you'll need to listen to first before you part with your cash. 6 Darren Rea |
