The threepart series Hatfields & McCoys is based on a true story about two feuding families who nearly launched a war between Kentucky and West Virginia. John Debney and Tony Morales's score weaves an updated classic western sound with rich melodies and Appalachian instruments. Simultaneously modern and classic, the music perfectly complements the gritty Civil War images... John Debney and Tony Morales's score for Hatfields & McCoys takes the classic western genre and attempts to turn the cliched sound, that we've come to expect, on its head. This it manages to do quite well, with the occasional exception where the score pays homage to the genre ('Jim and Cap Chase McCoy' being probably the best example.) The score is made up mainly of short pieces. Just when you're starting to enjoy a track it's over and another takes its place. There's a good mix of tracks with vocals, Hillbilly Band-esque music, and classically composed themes. The album consists of 39 tracks and lasts for 1 hr, 17 min, 12 sec. While it wasn't an album I'd rush to listen to again, I'm sure fans of the show will relish the chance to own this music. 6 Darren Rea Buy this item online
