Shirou Emiya is an ordinary school student which fate has dragged into a war for the Holy Grail, the possession of which will grant its owner anything they wish. Each fighter is aided by a spirit servant...

Fate/Stay Night: Unlimited Blade Works (2010 - 1 hr, 42 min, 21 sec) is an animated film based on the show and light novel of the same name. The film was directed by Yuji Yamaguchi from a Takuya Satō script.

This is a ‘what was happening elsewhere’ story, as it tracks the background of the main story. For fans of the show the story weaves in and out of stuff you will have already seen. In reality if you haven’t seen the original show the film is not going to make a lot of sense. The battles have never looked so good, but this is at the expense of the stories logic.

Magi’s and their servants battle one another, so this will be a real treat for fans of the show, as they move closer to the grail. But without the background information this is going to be a confusing experience for the casual viewer. Part of the problem is that they have attempted to condense the story, which took a whole series to tell, into the constraints of a movie.

The 1.78:1 anamorphic widescreen picture does benefit from better production qualities; the show has never looked so good. On the downside the actual story feels like a series of events stitched together. I have watched the whole of the series and to me it still felt bitty. Both the 5.1 English dub and Japanese original work well.

The disc comes with a few extras including the Blu-ray and DVD promos, the theatrical teaser, the theatrical trailer, TV spots and TVC’s, in other words adverts.

With the success of the show this must have seemed the next logical step in the franchise, but it tries to do too much in too little time. They would have been better telling a more coherent story.
