Bridging the gap between 1982's Tron and 2010's Tron: Legacy, composer Joseph Trapanese follows in the footsteps of Wendy Carlos' and Daft Punk's groundbreaking scores with his work on Tron: Uprising. As arranger and orchestrator he collaborated with Daft Punk on their Tron: Legacy soundtrack, a top 10 album in the US and certified gold with over 500,000 units sold. For Uprising, Joseph adapted the original Daft Punk synthesizer patches and sound palette used in Tron: Legacy for Beck's journey in Argon City, paying homage to the film while also broadening the sonic world of The Grid with new instrumentation and colour... Joseph Trapanese score for Tron: Uprising is a wonderful collection of modern sounds and retro music. For example, there are elements of Jean Michel Jarre's '80s output on tracks like 'Paige's Past' and 'Beck Betrayed'; while there's a hint of Hans Zimmer's work on Gladiator on tracks like 'Dyson Drops In', 'Tron's Promise', 'Revenge' and 'Redemption'. 'Tron's Turn' holds this album's strongest theme based track, whilst 'Goodbye Renegade' is a modern, electronic track with a classical theme at its core. 'Lux's Sacrifice' is arguably this album's most beautiful track. Personal favourites include 'Tesler Throwdown', 'Torture' and 'Renegades Pledge - End Credits'. Of this album's 20 tracks (making up 1 hr, 15 min, 59 sec) the final four tracks (representing 19 min, 53 sec) are by various artists: 'Lightbike Battle (3OH!3 Remix)'; 'Inferno (Opiuo Remix)'; 'Dyson (David Hiller Remix)'; and 'Cole Plante - Rezolution (Inspired by)'. The album represents a good mix of musical styles and emotions and is well worth seeking out. 9 Darren Rea |
