Based on the 1994 novel by Jean-Christophe Grangé, Flight of the Storks is an international thriller that takes off when a young academic teams up with an amateur ornithologist to follow storks on their migration to Africa. Shot in South Africa, Istanbul and in various European locations, the miniseries produced by EuropaCorp Television and directed by Jan Kounen, the two-part film is a dark action thriller that is graced by a mesmerizing score by French composer Eric Neveux. His score underscores both the geographical and emotional journeys of the protagonists using beautiful flourishes of orchestral colours, subtle ethnical instrumentation and engaging thematic ideas... Eric Neveux's score for Flight of the Storks is, in places, an incredibly moving album. Tracks like 'Welcome to Antwerp', 'Not Friends Anymore' and 'Diamonds' show the diversity of his range. However, there are a few too many atmospheric background tracks - the sort of music that's designed to sit quietly and just add a touch of feeling to the imagery on screen. But, where Neveux cleverly straddles the line between atmospheric and beautiful music is in his track 'The Flight of the Storks', which is very subtle and unobtrusive, but slowly builds to an incredibly beautiful climax. The album contains 22 tracks and lasts for 52 min, 10 sec. It's an album that's worth checking out, but you probably won't want to listen to about a third of it more than once. The other tracks, however, are well worth getting hold of. 7 Darren Rea |
