Since the release of their self-recorded 2009 album, ahab, Callum Adamson and Dave Burn have been joined by Seebs Llewellyn and Luke Price. The result is a much richer, larger sound... There is a rich country vibe running through ahab's latest album, Wits End. But it's not exclusively "country" enough to put off those who aren't fans of the genre. There's a folksy side to the album and it brought to mind some of the early years of The Levellers music. Wits End kicks off on the right note with the upbeat 'Wish You', which is a lively, intoxicating offering, this is followed by 'Lightnin' Bug', which sounds like a country take on 'Chapel of Love'. Personal highlights for me included 'Run Me Down', which is a beautiful track; the mellow 'Docker's Hands'; 'Lucy', which has a wonderful riff running throughout; and the upbeat 'Rosebud'. The album contains 11 tracks and lasts for 38 min, 05 sec. If you're looking for something mellow, and a little different, this is well worth taking a risk on. 7 Nick Smithson |
