The indomitable DCI Vera Stanhope, assisted by her trusted colleague, DS Joe Ashworth, steps up for another series of challenging cases. She investigates the mysterious death of a pensioner on a busy commuter train, unearths a thirty year mystery after a brutal murder on the sands of a seaside resort , unpicks the tragic last months of a failed novelist gunned down on a remote Northumberland moor, and delves into the tangled life of a businessman found floating in the water under the Gateshead Millennium Bridge...

The fourth series of Vera sees another four episodes based around the characters created by crime writer Ann Cleeves. Series four was originally broadcast between 27 April and 18 May 2014.

The episodes in this collection include:

On Harbour Street: DS Ashworth's daughter is the only real witness to the death of a pensioner, who appears to have been stabbed, on a packed train. Ashworth took the train with his daughter because it was cheaper then getting a taxi, but now he's regretting the move as his daughter finds the body when she rushes back to the empty train to wake the woman, who she believes is asleep.

Protected: A young property developer is found dying on the beach in Whitley Bay, late one night. But the man appears to have had no connections to the place and certainly has no business dealings there. The chief suspect in the case soon becomes apparent. The owner of a Whitley Bay arcade lost his 15 year old son when he fell from the roof of the dead man's father's house years before. Vera even manages to secure, what appears to be, the murder weapon: A baseball bat, with the dead man's blood on it, locked up in the arcade man's office.

The Deer Hunter: Vera is called to a quarry to identify the body of a dead man who was killed by a single gunshot wound. The man was in the middle of selling his recently deceased father's property to a wealthy local family that run a deer hunting holiday experience. This family become the main suspects after it was revealed that the dead man had just pulled out of the negotiation for reasons unknown. But what does all this have to do with a local legend? A giant stag, some say is folklore, known as The Emperor Hadrian...

Death Of a Family Man: When the body of a man is pulled from the river, everything points to suicide. But why? He was a happily married man who everyone said was always in good spirits. The postmortem reveals it was anything but suicide, and when Vera does a little more digging she discovers that he wasn't happily married in fact he may have been leading a double life.

As with previous series' it's Brenda Blethyn's dry sense of humour and empathy that help make the show one that you'll instantly warm to. Vera, having had a bad upbringing, can relate to suspects in a way that others can't, and she can equally smell when she's being played for a mug.

So, another four excellent episodes, all of which are different in almost every respect, helping to keep this series fresh. There are no extras.
