Uncertain of his sister's fate, a boy awakens in the middle of a forest on the "edge of hell". While seeking his missing elder sister, he encounters only a few human characters who either attack him, run away, or are dead. The forest eventually gives way to a crumbling city environment... Limbo is a dark (in both visual presentation and in its twisted humour) puzzle game that sees you play as a silhouetted boy who has to traverse the 2D environment avoiding traps and using elements in your surroundings in order to get past objects in your way. It's a simple game, with a simple design, but it's impressive how much atmosphere it generates. There are certain areas that you'll think you know what you have to do to pass the obstacle in your way... but when you realise you're not making any progress, it's time to look at your surroundings again. Sometimes it can be as simple as retreading your steps very slightly, other times you'll have to check your environment for something handy. Basically if you can move it then it's going to come in useful. You're going to die... and a lot... and actually one of the amusing aspects of the game is the various horrific ways your poor character bites the bullet. It's cheap and a whole lot of fun. It's well worth picking this up if you're looking for something a little different. 9 Nick Smithson |
