The enigmatic, soulful, New York–based singer songwriter, Kendra Morris releases her debut album Banshee. Morris draws upon cinematic elements, soul, blues and seventies funk... Kendra Morris was acknowledged by ASCAP (American Society of Composers, Authors and Publishers) and the Songwriters Hall of Fame in 2011. She was also awarded the 2011 Holly Prize, which recognizes excellence in song writing, performing, and musicianship. In 2012, Morris toured with Motown Funk Brother Dennis Coffey and has received support from American DJ, producer and the other half of hip-hop duo Gang Starr, DJ Premier, who remixed her first single ‘Concrete Waves’. The most impressive aspect of this recording, and Morris as an artist, is her diversity as a singer. You wouldn't think that the voice that belted out 'Today' was also the more relaxed singer on 'If You Didn't Go'. In addition, her range is also impressive. From the highs of 'The Plunge' to the lows of 'How You Want It'. The inclusion of her take on Pink Floyd's 'Shine on You Crazy Diamond' was interesting - something that could have come off terribly, but it actually works incredibly well. And... dare I say it, being a Floyd fan of old, I actually preferred Morris's rendition. The album contains 14 tracks (57 min) and is almost a textbook example of how to deliver a diverse and well balanced album - in fact I was surprised that this was Morris's debut release. Her performance has that confidence that usually comes with year's of experience. This is an album that's well worth adding to your collection. 9 Nick Smithson Buy this item online
