Alternative orchestral ensemble Human Pyramids release their debut album Planet Shhh! through Three Mile Town Records. The brainchild of Edinburgh-born composer and multi-instrumentalist Paul Russell, Human Pyramids are an eclectic outfit whose rare sound channels jubilant chamber music and post-punk with exquisite results...

Harnessing the power of a 25-piece choir, a Glaswegian Balkan Brass Band, a classically-trained String Quartet and a veteran rhythm section blended with guitars and synthesizers (along with the occasional pot, pan and wine bottle) Human Pyramids are a breath of fresh air in an otherwise formulaic industry. Their sound is unique, almost experimental, and very pleasing to the ear.

Planet Shhh! opens with 'Tall Tales’, a cheery offering that is almost guaranteed to put a smile on your face and get you tapping your feet and nodding your head. 'The Bubble' reminded me of PSAAP's output, with its use of, what sounds like, childrens toys as instruments. 'Singing Sands' is another highlight that slowly builds to a frenzy before slowly dying back down.

While original in sound, their individual formula remains pretty much the same from song to song: start soft, ramp up the 'rock' factor and then calm down again. It's a sound that works well. There isn't a dull track here. If you're looking for a new, instrumental sound then you may well have found it with Human Pyramids.
