With their new album, Selected Recordings, Acid Baby Jesus has assembled a collection of songs from their past two years of recordings. A lot of the songs on this 11 track (33 min, 14 sec) album push the envelope, with the band never shy to experiment with their sound. Guitar lines may or may not be backwards. Conventional in their basic rock’n’roll foundation, these tracks are steeped in layers of organ, Jew's harp, bongos, gongs and a nice assortment of other instruments of the onomatopoeic persuasion. Now, depending on your stance, this will either be its weakness or its strength. On the positive side, each track is like discovering a trippy, beautiful work of art. But on the negative side, the album doesn't flow well and what we end up with are songs with such a diverse range that I doubt anyone will actually embrace more than half the tracks here. This really is an album that will divide listeners. Some, for example, will find the singing on 'Row by Row' to be liberating while others will find the bored sounding vocals to be irritating. Likewise, the singing on 'Trouble Maker' will either have you chilled out, or infuriated that what sounds like a drunk has been allowed in front of a microphone. 6 Nick Smithson Buy this item online
