Caldera Records releases Shigeru Umebayashi's original score for the 2011 movie Trishna. The movie, directed by Michael Winterbottom, is loosely based on the famous novel Tess of the d'Urbervilles by Thomas Hardy. Winterbottom decides to let the story take place in India where a working class girl falls in love with a businessman. Although they have mutual feelings, it seems impossible to pursue their happiness due to their different traditions and upbringings...

If you're looking for a bright and breezy score to blow away the cobwebs... then this isn't it. Shigeru Umebayashi's score for Trishna is bursting with sad, emotionally charged melancholic themes. For me, this is perfect, as I love these sort of scores - nothing touches the soul and senses like a sad score.

The album contains 15 tracks (38 min, 04 sec) of heart wrenching, beautiful music. Although I have to admit that I was brought out of the moment briefly with the tracks 'Trishna and Jay' and 'Trishna and Jay 2', which reminded me of John Williams's score for Schindler's List.

This is a beautiful score and is certainly one that lovers of sad, emotional music will instantly fall in love with.
