The first cave paintings containing art made by primitive humans were discovered in Spain in 1870 - some of which are believed to be 40,000 years old. Studies into the origins of music suggest a correlation between the development of music and cave art in what is known as the ‘cultural explosion’ of 60,000 to 30,000 years ago. It is believed that these and other new forms of behaviour and creative expression reflected the emergence of ‘intentionality’ as humans passed from instinctive behaviour to intentional thought...

To really appreciate Craig Safan's experimental album, Rough Magic: Music Inspired by the Paleolithic Paintings of Europe, you really need to be familiar with the Paleolithic cave paintings from numerous regions of Europe, as well as being open to atmospheric experimental music. Personally, like most people, I can't say that I'm particularly knowledgeable - beyond the layman - of either.

At best this could be described as experimental music, at worst you could call it a din. for me, it didn't work as a standalone project. It's the sort of music that should accompany an exhibition where attendees can view the paintings that inspired each segment of music. It's certainly not the type of album you can listen to on its own merits and get much from.

If experimental music is your passion, then you may enjoy this. The album contains 13 tracks (48 min, 49 sec) and while I appreciate what Safan was trying to create, it feels a little odd without any visual stimuli. It's great that Safan can engage in something he's so obviously passionate about, but I can't see much of a market for the end result.
