Evangelist is the work of Gavin Clark, Pablo Clements and James Griffith (collectively known as Evangelist). Sadly, the world lost Clark earlier this year (2015) at the age of 46. Clark will be better known to This is England fans for his cover of The Smith's 'Please, Please, Please Let Me Get What I Want'. Evangelist is designed as a concept album, which is, loosely, an autobiographical tale that follows the life of a preacher. The story follows his peak, his downward spiral into drugs and vice, his attempted redemption and ultimately his failure. The album contains 11 tracks (41 min, 12 sec) and is greatly enhanced by the fact there's a plot, of sorts, that neatly ties everything together. It's odd, given Clark's links with The Smith's how I was reminded of Morrissey's 'I Will See You In Far-Off Places' (from the album Ringleader Of The Tormentors) when listening to the opening of 'Spirit'. While I did enjoy this album, I got the distinct feeling that it wasn't completely finished; that maybe Clark still had some spit and polish to add to the album. Sadly he died before he could really become a household name. Evangelist is a fine way to bow out. 8 Nick Smithson Buy this item online
