What’s the matter, Jack? Never ridden through an alien jungle on a stolen Clixian Spineback? You need to get out more!” The Doctor, Rose and Captain Jack are once again entangled with the Slitheen… or, to be more precise, they’ve fallen smack bang into the middle of a Raxacoricofallapatorian civil war! You’ve never seen these skinsuit-wearing shapeshifters in their natural hunting grounds – with a murderous dose of acid rain – or witnessed them this terrifying! The Doctor and Jack face the impossible quest of finding Rose… before she and an entire planet are lost to another galactic war! Trust no one…!

As I started to read this issue, I began to wonder whether this might not in fact be the concluding episode of the Doctormania storyline. With Rose on the run with Slist Fay-Flut Marteveer-Thon Slitheen, and the Raxas Alliance of worlds on the brink of war, there’s a lot of plot to resolve here. Surely there must be at least one more episode left to go…? But no, this is the final part, and it rattles along at a breakneck pace – even packing in an inventive new use for Raxacoricofallapatorian skinsuits, a rather gruesome new application for their vulnerability to vinegar, and a dinosaur-like reptilian mount.

Disappointingly, we don’t get to see any creatures who look like Abzorbaloff from Love & Monsters among the members of the Raxas Alliance, even though his home planet, Clom (a neighbour of Raxacoricofallapatorius), is mentioned a few times. We do see some beaked beings with similar Mohawk hairstyles, so perhaps they are from the same place.

The plot zooms past a little too quickly, really. The villain’s scheme and motivation feel underdeveloped, and the reader is left with a sense of “Oh, is it over already?” However, writer Cavan Scott has left some room at the end for a very exciting lead-in to the next story…
