The hilarity begins when professor Sherman Klump finds romance with fellow DNA specialist, Denise Gaines, and discovers a brilliant formula that reverses ageing. But Sherman’s thin and obnoxious alter ego, Buddy Love, wants out and a big piece of the action. And when Buddy gets loose, things get seriously nutty. Now, it’s up to Mama, Papa, Ernie and Granny Klump to throw their weight around and save the day... Nutty Professor II: The Klumps is the sequel to 1996's The Nutty Professor. With the Klump family scene in The Nutty Professor being one of the most popular and memorable, it's probably not a huge surprise that the sequel focuses more on them and their constant bickering than it does on Sherman and Buddy Love. The film opens with Sherman dreaming of his wedding day. It's obviously a dream, because the bride appears to be Janet Jackson. "What an odd cameo" you'll be thinking, "but very funny". The film becomes even more bizarre when we discover that Jackson isn't a cameo and Sherman's dream wasn't about marrying Jackson the famous singer. She plays Sherman's love interest in the film; Denise Gaines one of his colleagues at the university who has created a way to isolate individual genetic code and remove it. Sherman is working on a fountain of youth formula, and Buddy Love is a forgotten memory... but Buddy is still deep down inside Sherman and he's slowly starting to surface again. It starts off slowly, with Buddy taking control of Sherman momentarily resulting in Sherman saying things only Buddy would say. When a romantic gesture towards Denise is sabotaged by Buddy, Sherman decides to take Denise's formula and get rid of Buddy for good. Unfortunately the resulting procedure sees Buddy leaving Sherman's body and becoming a living individual. This also results in Sherman's intelligence starts to decrease and the race is on to sort out the mess before he becomes too stupid to even care. Again, like The Nutty Professor, the movie really rests on Murphy's shoulders and thankfully he pulls out all the stops giving us a soft Sherman and over the top Buddy. But with the rest of the Klump family along for the ride there's never a dull moment. Even now (2016), 16 years after it's original release, this is still a film that will entertain children and adults alike. Extras include Spotlight on Location (24 min, 15 sec - a 'Making of...' feature); an audio commentary with the director; A Conversation with Director Peter Segal and Producer Brian Grazer (24 min, 26 sec which plays over the film.
