A poor choice of marriage finds princess Sharahazade betrothed to marry the cruel Prince Murad. On the night before their wedding a rebel known as the Desert Hawk steals into her camp pretending to be Murad, marries the princess and disappears in the morning with her dowry. Infuriated, Sharahazade is unaware that the real Murad means to ill use her and the dashing rogue, the Desert Hawk, might turn out to be her only salvation... The Desert Hawk (1950. 1 hr, 17 min) is a low budget fantasy adventure film directed by Frederick De Cordova, who was better known for his work in television, especially The Tonight Show Starring Johnny Carson. Isn’t it funny how times have moved on? At one time you would not have batted an eyelash as a white actor covered his face with paint to change his nationality, but here we have Richard Greene, the best Robin Hood on TV, appearing as an Arab, and a very unconvincing one at that. Not that this is a realistic depiction of Arabia, in costume and locations this has more in common with the fantasies of 1001 Arabian Nights and Aladdin. It’s all very fluffy, swashbuckling nonsense, the sort of film which used to be repeated on Saturday mornings for kids. The main stars of Yvonne De Carlo, Richard Greene, Jackie Gleason and Rock Hudson all have great fun in keeping the story going, but where the bad guy is a pantomime villain; we already know how the film is going to end. 5 Charles Packer Buy this item online
