Lakeshore Records release Bobby Johnston's score for City of Gold. In this richly penetrating documentary, Pulitzer Prize-winning food critic Jonathan Gold shows us another side to Los Angeles, where ethnic cooking is a kaleidoscopic portal to the mysteries of an unwieldy city and the soul of America. As piping-hot platters are served up, so are stories of immigrants whose secret family recipes are like sacred offerings pledged for the opportunity to build their American Dream... Bobby Johnston's score for City of Gold is interesting in that it manages to collect together many varied themes. There's a strong helping of Jazz based tunes weaving its way throughout the album, so if you're not a big Jazz fan you may not enjoy this score quite so much. The album contains 19 tracks (33 min, 10 sec) and while I found this quite an entertaining listen, I don't think there's much life in it outside a handful of listens. 6 Darren Rea Buy this item online
