MovieScore Media adds its seventeenth title to its Discovery Collection with the music for Michael Winterbottom’s In This World, the winner of the Golden Bear at the Berlin Film Festival in 2003. The music by Academy Award-winning composer Dario Marianelli underscores the plight of two Afghan refugees as both Enayat and his cousin Jamal embark on a perilous journey to reach London through Iran, Turkey and Italy. Based on the true story of the two central characters, Winterbottom’s movie won a lot of critical praise for dealing with a controversial subject that showed a different side of the Middle East whose role was just being reappraised in a post-9/11 world... Dario Marianelli delivers an interesting score for In This World. Middle Eastern influences pepper the music, as you'd expect, but this is more a classical soundtrack with a few pointers to the film's location. The score features authentic Middle Eastern folk songs performed by Parvin Cox and includes haunting passages for the duduk performed by Dirk Campbell. The album includes 14 tracks (45 min, 19 sec) with highlights including 'Jamal Leaves Home'; 'Waiting in Istanbul'; 'Asylum Application N.1327783_B'; and this album's most beautiful track 'Elegy for Refugees'. The main theme, which is most notable in the tracks 'Jamal Leaves Home' and 'Asylum Application N.1327783_B', reminded me one of the prominent themes from James Newton Howard's score for After Earth. This is an album with a lot of heart, beautiful emotional themes and a lot of spirit. 9 Darren Rea Buy this item online
