Sony Music release the Spider-Man: Homecoming Original Motion Picture Soundtrack featuring the music of Grammy® and Academy Award®-winning composer Michael Giacchino. A young Peter Parker/Spider-Man, who made his debut in Captain America: Civil War, begins to navigate his newfound identity as the web-slinging super hero in. Thrilled by his experience with the Avengers, Peter returns home, where he lives with his Aunt May, under the watchful eye of his new mentor Tony Stark. Peter tries to fall back into his normal daily routine – distracted by thoughts of proving himself to be more than just your friendly neighbourhood Spider-Man – but when the Vulture emerges as a new villain, everything that Peter holds most important will be threatened...

I first became aware of Michael Giacchino's work when playing the Medal of Honor console games many moons ago. For that franchise he worked his magic delivering numerous hauntingly beautiful themes. Since then I've been impressed with his work on movies like Super 8, Jurassic World and Rogue One... in fact any time he flexes his John WIlliams-esque muscles. On the other hand I've not been quite so struck on his scores for Dawn of the Planet of the Apes and Star Trek Beyond. It's not that they are bad - far from it - it's just that I was hoping for scores that stood up on their own merits rather than adding a little atmosphere to the movie.

Spider-Man: Homecoming is a huge step forward, but it's more atmospheric than it is memorable. In fact, after several weeks of listening to it I'm still finding the majority of the music to be instantly forgettable... but it's still enjoyable.

The score contains 22 tracks (1 hr, 07 min, 49 sec) and while there's little here I'll be adding to any playlists in the near future, it's still an interesting if slightly by-the-numbers score. It was fun to hear the old theme tune to the 1967 cartoon show incorporated subtly into the opening track. It also includes two easter egg tracks ('The Queens Community Bank Jingle' and 'The Real Reason Peter Quit the Band').
