With the Flare continuing to kill the remainder of humanity, the last of the immune Gladers attack a train trying to rescue their friend, Minho, from the clutches of WCKD. When they discover that he is missing the Gladers travel to the Last City determined to get Minho back and stop WCKD from stealing more immune children... Maze Runner: The Death Cure (2018. 2 hr, 17 min, 59 sec) is the last in the Maze Runner trilogy of dystopian science fiction films. The film was directed by Wes Ball, who also directed the first two films in the series. Although not a critical success, the film made a healthy profit and provides a satisfying conclusion for fans of the series. Dylan O'Brien returns as Thomas, our POV character and the hero of the story. He has come a long way since we first saw him wake up in the maze with amnesia. He has grown into the hero of the story and O’Brian does well to keep the audience’s attention in a film which is just a tad too long for the material. Not that there isn’t much to like about the film, especially the action sequences. Audience new to the franchise may be a little lost as the film opens with no explanatory preamble preferring to drop you straight into the attack on the train. A ten-minute action sequence played out even before the film's title. Discovering that Minho (Ki Hong Lee) is not on the train Thomas, Newt (Thomas Brodie-Sangster) and Frypan (Dexter Darden) head off to the Last City, the train's destination. The great walled city is under siege from the Cranks, human survivors of the plague. When the crowd is attacked the three are captured by masked men, one of who turns out to be their erstwhile friend Gally (Will Poulter), who helps them breech the city walls. Within the city, Ava (Patricia Clarkson) continues to look for a cure to the Flare. Aided by her security chief, Janson (Aidan Gillen) she is the one kidnapping survivors hoping to make a vaccine. Thomas also discovers that Teresa (Kaya Scodelario) is also working with WCKD and Ava. The film has some stunning set pieces which belies its relatively modest budget and offers much needed scope and scale. From the opening train heist to general mayhem and destruction, the film gives a lot of bangs for your buck. The disc comes with an English DD 5.1 audio track, several subtitles options. The film is presented with an aspect ratio of 2.39:1. The disc has a couple of special features including a full-length audio commentary from Wes Ball, T. S. Nolan and Joe Hartwick jr. The Final Run (5 min, 48 sec) is basically a promo for the film, but with lots of nice behind the scenes sequences. Allies Reunited (5 min, 14 sec) has the actors reflecting on their time together across the three films. In the end it’s a decent action film, if a tad too long. 6 Charles Packer Buy this item online
