On Parts to Play, critically acclaimed violinist Moonkyung Lee turns from the symphonic environment of the critically lauded label debut, Tchiakovsky, on which she performed with the London Symphony Orchestra, to a more intimate setting, with only pianist Martha Locker as her partner on a selection of works that include both stunning solo performances and intricate yet simple duets... For Moonkyung Lee's follow up to 2017's Tchiakovsky, the violinist performs a number of piece for solo violin, as well as some with piano accompaniment. This 13 track album (54 min, 45 sec) incorporates pieces from Prokofiev ('Sonata for Solo Violin') amid compositions from six contemporary composers who collectively represent three decades of works. I was particularly keen to hear how Lee would approach Rain Worthington's 'Jilted Tango duet for Violin and Piano'. The composer's 2016 Dream Vapors: Selected Works for Orchestra is an album I still dig out and listen to on a regular basis. Lee doesn't disappoint and does a wonderful job of performing Worthington's composition. The same is true of the remaining pieces. It's actually a well balanced collection that allows Lee to showcase her talents beautifully. A fantastic album that also acts as a taster of works by composers you may not have previously come across.
