In May 2017, Marin Mazzie and Jason Danieley presented a new concert at Feinstein's / 54 Below called Broadway and Beyond, featuring songs from both the Great White Way and the Great American Songbook. Taking listeners on a journey through the shows on which they left their indelible marks, such as Ragtime, Passion, The Full Monty, Curtains, The Visit, Kiss Me, Kate, and more, the concerts would be their final NYC appearances together, as Mazzie passed away in 2018 after a three-year battle with ovarian cancer... Broadway & Beyond: Live at Feinstein's/54 Below sees Marin Mazzie and Jason Danieley deliver a live concert, packed with music that had become dear to them in their long and varied musical careers. The album kicks of with 'Trojan Women Medley: All the Way' which sees Mazzie and Danieley duet before branching off and singing segments on their own. The problem with this is that their voices don't compliment each other and they are slightly out of tune with the band. This is something that seems to happen a little too frequently as the album progresses. On their own they are fine, together they sound clunky and incompatible. This must be just a problem with this recording, as the duo had been singing together for over 20 years. Between the songs, the couple deliver a little patter with the audience. As you'd expect, this includes funny stories and a little pathos, as well as mention of the cancer charity that the two are raising money for. It's sad that Mazzie died so tragically young, when she had lots more to give to musical theatre. Fans of her's and her husband will cherish the opportunity to get to know them a little better, especially the songs that mean a lot to them.
