Maximilien Mathevon releases his latest album, Haunted Light, via Plaza Mayor Company Ltd. This electro album is inspired by light, all sorts of lights, and most notably the beauty and mystery at the heart of the Northern lights. To Mathevon, these lights are haunted and inspired him to create pulsating music, full of wonder and contemplation. The composer was also inspired by the specificity of light, the speed of light, the way light travels through the void, infrareds, ultraviolets, the shattering of light on a prism...

Once again Maximilien Mathevon delivers an interesting and deep collection of themes on his latest concept album, Haunted Light. Over the course of these 9 tracks (38 min, 49 sec) the composer explores the mystery behind the beauty that is light - in all its many guises.

It's an electronic album which has a lot of depth to it. On a first play through I found it instantly accessible, with some good, solid themes, but the more times I listened to it the more layers I peeled back to discover more intricate and rewarding segments.

As an aside, 'Infrared' brought to mind Klaus Doldinger and Giorgio Moroder's work on The Neverending Story (1984).

In places it's hypnotic, at times it's reflective, but throughout it's engaging. In fact, the only way this could possibly be improved is if it were to be fully orchestrated.
