Shanghai Restoration Project's latest LP, Flashbacks in a Crystal Ball, blends traditional Chinese instruments and hip-hop, whilst taking influence from the 1930's Shanghai jazz scene... Flashbacks in a Crystal Ball is a bit of an acquired taste. It's certainly one that you need to invest quite a lot of time in order to reap its benefits... but after the first listen you'll think you pretty much know if it's for you or not. But give it another chance if you're not totally convinced. Once you get into their stride you'll realise that the investment is worth the time. Over the course of these 9 songs (49 min, 23 sec) the band play around with all the tools (i.e. various instruments) at their disposal. Tracks like 'Time Gambler' is a Western pop song delivered in a Chinese style... It's an interesting mix that works beautifully. Its upbeat pop sensibilities are hard to resist and it's the sort of LP you can put on to lift you out of even the most gloomiest of moods. Great fun... but maybe a little too sugary sweet for some. 7 Nick Smithson Buy this item online
