Shrimper Records release Dennis Callaci's new solo album, Dead of the Day... Dead of the Day is like a stream of consciousness, in that it feels like Dennis Callaci wrote the lyrics in a single pass and then recorded it on the first take. Rough around the edges isn't always a bad thing... but here it's not exactly art. I'm not sure if it's intentional, or just a very bad mix, but the levels on 'All Saints' are set at a point where it is in serious danger of damaging your speakers if you play it loud. And if that doesn't, the sonic wails on 'On a Line' will cause you some serious problems. Callaci's vocals aren't the easiest to get on with either and from track to track they can grate pretty bad. Once again, the mix seems to be an issue on 'Scoreless' - a song that feels like it belongs on a poor man's Songs for Drella. It's certainly an album you'll either enjoy or dislike. For me it was a little too rough around the edges and tended to annoy rather than entertain. 3 Nick Smithson Buy this item online
