New Zealand based Marlin’s Dreaming's new album, Quotidian, mixes elements of indie, psychedelic, and surf rock. The first single from the album, 'Sink Or Swim' takes a strong melody and yearning vocals and is a track that lead singer Semisi Maiai says is about detachment, the feeling of struggling and being at the whim of something outside of himself... The single 'Outwards Crying' sees the band musically exploring a way to change their surroundings and escape - a track that will certainly resonate strongly with a lot of people. The album contains 12 upbeat sounding tracks (46 min, 20 sec) that contain deep, soulful lyrics. There's a timeless quality to the songs, but there's a distinct '90s vibe that shines through. However, just when you think you've got a handle on their sound, they throw 'Mr Sun' at you... a hazy, lazy '70s hippy sounding track. While there's nothing overly fresh or new here, it's a pretty solid indie album that doesn't disappoint. 7 Nick Smithson Buy this item online
