Trifox is a colourful and cartoonish twin stick action-adventure

Trifox, at first glance, looks like a run-of-the-mill retro 3D platformer. But it is anything but. it is a colourful and cartoonish twin stick action-adventure featuring a phenomenal fox with a multitude of talents. As the game moves forwards you can upgrade your chosen class. Warrior, Mage, Engineer and either focus on moving forward with that one class, or or mix-and-match abilities to create your own unique tailor-made hero.

When you start the game you can choose to wield a giant hammer as a Warrior; Master magic and mystery as a Mage; or use a backpack full of gadgets as an Engineer. But then you can select elements from other classes. So you can customise your character to cast spells as well as fire a Gatling Gun. In total there are 30 abilities to unlock. Collect and spend coins to gain new skills, such as Spike Slam, Shield Bubble, Guided Missile, and many more.

You'll really have to think your way out of situations

In fact, there's huge replayability here. On a first play through you might fall in love with the Gatling Gun, but you can easily switch that out for a giant hammer at a later date. It's amazing how different the game plays depending on the weapons you wield.

If you're a gamer that loves to explore every inch of the gaming environment in a bid to find all the collectable items, then you'll be in heaven here, as reaching hard to find areas reaps rewards. While it can be challenging on occasion, you'll more often than not be gifted with a reward that allows you to unlock a new ability.

Wield a giant hammer as a Warrior

The puzzle aspect is not your usual bland offering either. Here you'll really have to think your way out of situations. While there's nothing too taxing, the answer isn't right in front of your nose as it is in most games - presumably game developers are normally worried that this will slow the pace of the game down. Trifox shows that the opposite is actually the case.

It's fun and the customisation element ensures that you can play to your strengths as a gamer. Plus, and this was a huge surprise, they're practically giving this away. The £15.99 price tag makes this pretty much a no-brainer.
